Why Contreras' No. 1: The Brewers backstop sits atop our rankings after a terrific 2024 campaign. Contreras led all MLB catchers in runs scored, on-base percentage, and steals while leading NL backstops in homers, RBIs, and batting average.
Player worth reaching for: Smith, our seventh-ranked catcher, is coming off a down season thanks largely to a brutal three-month stretch from June to August. He still managed to post 20 homers, 75 RBIs, and 77 runs scored despite struggling, and he's typically been one of the top backstops taken over the last four years. Smith also hits in a stacked Dodgers lineup, so there are a lot of opportunities for production.
Dark-horse pick: Bart showed signs of what made him a former No. 2 pick after the Pirates acquired him from the Giants last season. In 80 games, the 28-year-old belted 13 homers and added 45 RBIs while producing the fourth-highest slugging percentage among catchers with 250 plate appearances. Bart is expected to enter 2025 as the starting catcher, so those numbers could skyrocket with more plate appearances.
