Ryan Johnson makes Angels without playing in minors
Los Angeles Angels right-hander Ryan Johnson made the team out of spring training, the team announced.
Johnson, 22, hasn't played a single game in the minor leagues after being drafted with the No. 74 pick in 2024.
The Angels received the compensatory pick that was used to select Johnson when Shohei Ohtani signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in December 2023.
Garrett Crochet was the last big-league player to skip the minors altogether. The now Boston Red Sox left-hander did it with the Chicago White Sox in September 2020.
Johnson posted a 3.97 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP and 10 strikeouts over 11 1/3 innings this spring. He recorded a 3.46 ERA and 11.2 K/9 over three years with the Dallas Baptist Patriots in the NCAA.
The Angels also selected the contract of two-time All-Star Tim Anderson and designated left-handers Angel Perdomo and José Quijada for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
