- Daniel Cormier vaulted himself into the No. 2 position by capturing the vacant UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 187 in May. Cormier survived some heavy artillery from Anthony Johnson in the opening round before using his all-world wrestling skills to grind out "Rumble" en route to a slick rear-naked choke victory.
- Following Cormier's victory, Ryan Bader, Cormier's original opponent before Jon Jones' legal debacle, stormed the stage at the post-fight press conference in a brilliant piece of future fight promotion. Bader's brash antics likely earned him the first crack at Cormier's newly earned title.
- Ovince Saint Preux and Glover Teixeira will try to push their way into the division's top-five when they face each other at UFC Fight Night 74 in August. OSP is currently on a two-fight winning streak, while Teixeira is looking to snap a two-fight losing streak.
