Report: Pats finalizing trade to send Jones to Jags

The New England Patriots are finalizing a trade to send quarterback Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Patriots will receive Jacksonville's 2024 sixth-round pick (No. 192) for Jones, a source told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The 25-year-old reportedly needs to pass a physical to complete the deal, and the trade can't be processed until the new league year begins Wednesday.

Four clubs were in the mix for Jones, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. However, the Jaguars were the only team to make an offer to New England, a source told CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones.

Jones opened last season as the Patriots' starter but was benched after a 10-7 loss to the New York Giants in Week 12. New England went 2-9 in Jones' 11 starts in 2023. The Alabama product had 2,120 passing yards with 10 touchdowns against 12 interceptions.

Jones and incumbent backup C.J. Beathard will compete for the No. 2 quarterback job in Jacksonville behind starter Trevor Lawrence in 2024.

The Jaguars have about $20 million in cap space before the move, according to Over The Cap. Jones is scheduled to carry a cap hit of roughly $2.8 million next season.

Jones earned Pro Bowl honors as a rookie but has struggled to replicate his first season's success. He's totaled 8,918 yards, 46 touchdowns, and 36 picks in 42 starts.
