Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson is day-to-day after waking up with calf soreness, head coach Mike Tomlin said Thursday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Tomlin held Wilson out of practice despite the signal-caller's desire to participate, ESPN's Brooke Pryor reports.

Justin Fields took the first-team reps in Wilson's absence, per Rapoport.

The Steelers acquired both quarterbacks this offseason. Pittsburgh traded a conditional sixth-round draft pick to the Chicago Bears for Fields and signed Wilson after the Denver Broncos released him.

The pair highlight a reworked quarterback room after the Steelers dealt former starter and first-round pick Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles. Mason Rudolph and Mitch Trubisky, who both started games last season, joined the Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills, respectively.

Wilson is expected to be the Steelers' starting quarterback when they open their regular season Sept. 8 against the Atlanta Falcons.
