Report: Jets won't bring Rodgers back in 2025
The New York Jets have informed Aaron Rodgers that they're moving on from him, Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reports.
Rodgers received the news during a meeting in New Jersey last week, Glazer adds.
New York is likely to move on from wideout Davante Adams as well, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
New York hired head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey this offseason, and owner Woody Johnson previously said the decision on Rodgers' future with the team was up to them.
It was reported in January that Glenn was open to the four-time MVP returning. The 41-year-old quarterback is under contract for next season at a $23.5-million cap hit, but his deal includes no guaranteed money, according to Over the Cap.
The Jets would take a $49-million dead cap hit next season if they release or trade Rodgers before June 1, though that number drops to $14 million if they do so after June 1, per Over the Cap.
Rodgers expressed interest in continuing his playing career following the season, acknowledging that whether he remains with New York for 2025 is up to both him and the team.
The former Green Bay Packer has had an underwhelming two-season tenure with the Jets. He missed the 2023 campaign after tearing his Achilles in the season opener and led New York to a disappointing 5-12 record in 2024 while throwing for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
The former Super Bowl MVP started all 17 games coming off the major injury, but his mobility was limited. He ranked 19th among starting quarterbacks in EPA/play, according to Ben Baldwin's database, well below his usual standards.
Adams would reportedly be interested in signing with a West Coast team - such as the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Chargers, or Los Angeles Rams - if the Jets were to cut him.
