Miami's Ward joins list of prospects skipping NFL combine workouts
Miami quarterback Cam Ward became the latest projected first-round talent to opt out of on-field workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine this week.
"Me throwing here is not going to move me in no type of way," Ward told reporters Friday, including Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot. Similar to many other prospects who have chosen not to participate in on-field drills, the Hurricanes star is saving his workout for Miami's pro day.
It's common for some of the top prospects to skip on-field activities, saving their workouts for when NFL evaluators visit their campuses.
Colorado's Shedeur Sanders reportedly won't throw either when the quarterbacks take the field Saturday. He apparently intends to focus on the interview process and similarly prefers to throw to familiar targets when the Buffaloes hold their pro day.
Sanders' teammate Travis Hunter also told teams that he won't be working out in Indianapolis. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner created plenty of intrigue this week by saying he plans to continue playing full time on offense and defense in the NFL.
Penn State pass-rusher Abdul Carter won't take part in combine drills after injuring his shoulder near the end of last season. Medical testing at the combine Wednesday revealed that Carter is also dealing with a stress reaction in his right foot. The dynamic edge rusher was told that surgery wasn't advisable, and he remains on track to work out at Penn State's pro day March 28.
Penn State tight end Tyler Warren, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, and Ohio State receiver Emeka Egbuka are among other notable combine invitees who won't participate in drills.
