Lance joins Chargers after Cowboys stint

The Los Angeles Chargers and quarterback Trey Lance reached an agreement Friday, the team announced.

It's a one-year deal worth up to $6.2 million, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Lance spent the last two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, who acquired him in a 2023 trade with the San Francisco 49ers. He started only one game in Dallas, completing 20 of 34 pass attempts for 244 yards in the 2024 season finale versus the Washington Commanders.

The 24-year-old made four starts with the 49ers between 2021-22. He was named San Francisco's QB1 in '22 and made two appearances before sustaining a season-ending injury. He then became the team's third-string quarterback during the 2023 offseason before being traded to Dallas.

The Cowboys, who are led by star passer Dak Prescott, lost backup Cooper Rush to the Baltimore Ravens this offseason but recently made a trade to acquire Joe Milton from the New England Patriots.

Lance entered the NFL as the third overall pick in 2021 but hasn't lived up to the hype. He's passed for five touchdowns against four interceptions in 12 NFL appearances while rushing for 276 yards and one score.

In Los Angeles, Lance joins a QB depth chart that is headlined by Justin Herbert and also features backup Taylor Heinicke. Herbert started all 17 games this past season to help the Chargers reach the playoffs.
