Legendary coach Ara Parseghian in hospital for hip infection

Matt Cashore / USA TODAY Sports

Legendary coach Ara Parseghian, who led Notre Dame for 11 seasons between 1964-74, is in hospital due to a hip infection, according to Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune.

Parseghian, 94, is being treated with antibiotics since he's been deemed too old for an operation. He's undergone five previous surgeries on the hip.

Parseghian led the Fighting Irish to a pair of national championships, and was on the sidelines for the infamous 10-10 tie versus Michigan State in 1966 that saw the nation's No. 1 and No. 2 teams go toe-to-toe for the first time in the history of the AP Poll.

Parseghian coached at Northwestern for eight seasons, and at Miami (Ohio) for five campaigns before taking over at Notre Dame. He posted a 95-17-4 record with the Fighting Irish, and regularly communicates with current coach Brian Kelly.
