Hurts named Super Bowl MVP
Quarterback Jalen Hurts was named MVP of Super Bowl LIX after leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Hurts scored three touchdowns, including one on the ground. He completed 17 of 22 pass attempts for 221 yards and added 72 yards rushing. He also threw an interception.
He became the fifth quarterback in NFL history with multiple touchdown passes and a rushing score in a Super Bowl, according to league spokesperson Brian McCarthy. Ken Anderson, Brett Favre, Joe Montana, and Patrick Mahomes are the only other passers who've accomplished the feat.
Hurts' performances as a passer were scrutinized throughout the season, but he delivered a message for his doubters postgame.
"I can't control what these people think," he said. "But, if it takes all the hate and all the scrutiny and all the different opinions for me to be a world champion, then keep it coming."
Hurts opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown in the first quarter. His first passing touchdown went to A.J. Brown with 1:35 remaining in the second frame, which sent the Eagles to halftime with a 24-0 advantage. DeVonta Smith was on the receiving end of Hurts' second and final passing touchdown, a 46-yard bomb late in the third.
The 26-year-old avenged his first Super Bowl appearance - a 38-35 loss to the Chiefs. Hurts performed admirably in the Super Bowl LVII defeat two seasons ago, totaling four touchdowns, 304 passing yards, and 70 rushing yards. Three of his four scores came via his legs.
Hurts is the only passer with 200-plus passing yards and 50-plus rushing yards in multiple Super Bowls.
