New England draws with D.C. United, Sporting KC earn late win vs. 9-man Colorado
The New England Revolution will have to wait to guarantee their spot in the knockout stage after gifting D.C. United's Federico Higuain a second-half equalizer in Friday's 1-1 draw at the MLS is Back Tournament.
Bruce Arena's Revolution now sit joint-tops of Groups C on four points, level with Toronto FC ahead of a clash between the two clubs on July 21.
Despite the result, New England's stellar form under Arena continues. The five-time MLS Cup bridesmaids have only lost four of 26 matches since Arena replaced Brad Friedel last May.
New England snatched a deserved lead when forward Adam Buksa attacked a free header off a deflected cross and scored his second goal for the club shortly after the interval.
The Poland youth international's opener sparked a D.C. side that lacked inspiration through most of the opening stanza.
Higuain leveled the scoreline 18 minutes from time, pouncing on Antonio Delamea's limp backward pass to Matt Turner to bag his second goal of the tournament.
Elsewhere, Sporting Kansas City captured their first points of the tournament in a frenetic 3-2 victory over 9-man Colorado Rapids in Group D play.
Down two players and a goal after Danny Wilson and Jack Price were sent off 12 minutes apart, the Rapids snatched an equalizer courtesy of Jonathan Lewis' 84th-minute goal against the run of play.
But Colorado's late efforts were all for naught, as Graham Zusi was the hero for Sporting with a deflected 91st-minute winner.
