Chargers' James suspended 1 game for repeated violations of safety rules
Los Angeles Chargers defensive back Derwin James was suspended one game without pay for repeated violations of health and safety rules, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
The latest infraction was James' third-quarter hit on Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth during Pittsburgh's win on Sunday. James will appeal the suspension, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
"Your continued disregard for NFL playing rules will not be tolerated," Jon Runyan, the NFL vice president of football operations, wrote in a letter to James.

James is a cornerstone of the Chargers' defense, having recorded 21 tackles (two for loss) and one sack in 2024. He's been penalized 22 times and fined several times for late hits since entering the NFL as a first-round pick in 2018.
The 28-year-old was flagged for face mask and unnecessary roughness versus Pittsburgh.
James is the latest Chargers starter to become unavailable for the team's Week 4 game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Los Angeles is also expected to play the reigning Super Bowl champions without starting offensive tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater, who are both dealing with injuries. Quarterback Justin Herbert's status is uncertain after he aggravated a high ankle sprain in Week 3.
Los Angeles has a bye in Week 5.
