Report: Athletics, Butler discussing extension

The Athletics and outfielder Lawrence Butler are negotiating a contract extension, sources told Evan Drellich of The Athletic.

However, Butler didn't want to get into the details of the reported discussions.

"Hey, whatever the organization chooses to do, I'm happy with it," Butler said Wednesday. "I love being here. I'm excited to be here. I'm excited to play here. So, yeah, no comment on that."

Athletics general manager David Forst confirmed the club is talking with multiple players about extensions but also didn't provide any specifics.

"We've had conversations with a couple other players other than Brent (Rooker), and those talks are ongoing," Forst said. "It is an important thing for us to lock guys up (heading) into Las Vegas and make sure that we keep the core of what we think is a really good young team together, ongoing."

The 24-year-old Butler recorded 22 homers, 57 RBIs, 18 stolen bases, and an .807 OPS in just 125 games for the Athletics in 2024.

The Athletics already extended Rooker on a five-year, $60-million deal this offseason after a 2024 All-Star campaign in which he went deep 39 times with 112 RBIs and a .927 OPS.

The club also dished out a three-year, $67-million pact to right-hander Luis Severino and traded for left-hander Jeffrey Springs, as the franchise is set to play in Sacramento for at least three seasons before moving to Las Vegas.
